You asked......

Hi, I have started on the iris on black. I started on page 2 as that looked the easiest with all that dmc340. So far though the iris looks like a picture with the pixels. Is going to look like a shaded iris like the photo you have on your web site? I'm not 100% sure if I'm liking it. Did you cross stitch the iris and if you did, do you have a photo of it completed? Thanks for any help.

Reply.....

I have attached a 2-tier scan of the Iris on Black. The top half is the actual stitching as compared to the design pattern on the bottom.
The design may resemble a pixelated picture to you as that is exactly what photo to cross-stitch is. A cropped image that has been stretched. If you are stitching the design on 14 count aida it will look just like the attachment I have sent. If you are wanting more of a condensed result, you can acheive this by stitching on a higher count evenweave such as 16, 18 or 22 count. Most of my designs are done in 14 count as this is the most popular size. It's easiest to see and stitch. I also recommend that you stitch it on black or dark evenweave. As you can see from my stitching, I chose to stitch the entire black background and that can be very monotonous.
I'm not sure what you mean about shading like the picture on the website. The picture there is the design that is downloadable. The only explaination I can suggest is that an object in a photo used in photo cross-stitching will always appear at the same distance that it was captured by the camera. When the photo is cropped, there is no additional data added to the image. In fact, it is just being stretched. That is pixelation. Hence, the farther you move away from it, the less pixelated and more shaded it appears. You are recreating the the original distance created by the camera when the photo was taken. I hope this helps.

Does the back of my work have to look as good as the front?

If you wish to enjoy your time stitching, just stitch. Don't be overly concerned with creating a master work, front and back on each project. With each hour of practice your skill and knowledge will improve and before you realize it, your work will look as good on the back as it does on the front.
